Tim Quirke is an artist who has immersed himself in the philosophy and teachings of the great master painters.

Through extensive study he has developed an in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the classical artistic techniques. As a teacher Tim has endeavoured to pass on to his pupils the knowledge and enthusiasm for the traditional values embodied in the work of the old masters. Having recently left his native South Africa and resettled in New Zealand, Tim is continuing his interest in producing contemporary works based on traditional artistic values. Drawing from an early age Tim has now had nearly 50 years to develop his techniques based on these methods.

Tim’s work often includes direct references to the work of the masters; each one has a story and meaning beyond the purely aesthetic.

The confident and spontaneous approach to expressing his ideas shows  most clearly in Tim’s sketches, while his oil paintings are more carefully conceived and developed. An exceptional draughtsman, his drawing skill is clearly evident in all his work. These works of art are far more that decorative pictures, they have a quality that is rare in New Zealand art.

The extensive amount of study and work that has gone into each work will ensure its on-going relevance as well as value.

“Moving from one country to another scrambles one’s expectations and sharpens a sense of what is valuable. An existing interest in the thought or value orientation of a number of master artists becomes a mode of survival.”

“Drawing is the record and reconstruction of a most human response. Colour is the reintegration of emotional values intelligibly represented.”
